Chopra's parents never approved of his aspiration to become an actor so they enrolled him for an Engineering degree in Modern College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Pune. Chopra has said that, "I only did engineering because my parents asked me to do so. However, I was clear in my mind as to what I wanted." He has an older brother and a younger sister.

Television

After his studies, Chopra moved to Bombay and successfully auditioned for Zee TV's Mamta. Chopra played the role of Karan Srivastav in Mamta. His first prominent role was in SAB TV's serial Left Right Left where he played the character of Cadet Ali Baigh. Chopra joined the cast of Sony TV's Amber Dhara as Akshat Mehra after quitting Left Right Left. His stint with Amber Dhara did not last long as he was reportedly bumped off from the show.

After remaining off screen for a while Chopra was cast for his performance as Prem Juneja in Balaji Telefilms' love story Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil on Star Plus, opposite Additi Gupta. The popular show brought Harshad back into action, received high target rating points and created his massive fan following. Chopra exclaimed, "Kis Desh is very close to my heart as it got me my first awards." His bang on chemistry with costar Additi Gupta was an immediate success both nationally and internationally. Chopra left the show in between, however, to play the role of Arjun in 9X's short lived Kahaani Hamaaray Mahaabhaarat Ki. Popular demand, however, brought Chopra back to the sets of Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil to once again create magic as Prem Juneja in December 2008. The show lasted around two successful years, but was pulled off due to the death of the character Preet and the faltering story line that followed. Harshad's chemistry with co-star Additi Gupta is appreciated and loved by his fans, and the two are requested on screen frequently. Fan's dedication allowed for the jodi of Prem and Heer to reunite for a Valentines Day performance on Star One, several interviews and their hosting a tv show after the serial's ending. They are affectionatley called Harshiti and fans still demand their reunion in a new show till date.

After Kis Desh, Harshad Chopra made his comeback in Star Plus's project Tere Liye also produced by Balaji Telefilms, opposite Anupriya Kapoor. Tere Liye, however, did not complete a full year and was replaced by Navya due to falling TRPs.

Currently Harshad is playing Mohan Gala in Imagine TV's primetime serial Dharampatni The show is a love story between Mohan and his wife Kastur, played by Aasiya Kazi. Harshad's character is said to be loosely inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, but is contemporised. Mohan is a foreign-returned man who has adopted a foreign culture and has his own ways of looking at things.
